This page lists places that the different programs of our school visit throughout the year. Stay tuned for pictures and information; you'll see that we are everywhere. Students who are part of the CATC team have many opportunities to vist many work-related facilities throughout the year.
Health Academy & Biotechnology Students Visit the
Boston Museum of Science
On October 29th, 2009 61 students from the Health Academy and Biotechnology programs, four teachers, five parents and one administrator left CATC at 6:00 AM by bus to Portland. In Portland we boarded the "Downeaster", a passenger train that travels directly to Boston. We spent the day at the Boston Museum of Science. The BSM has a wide variety of programs and exhibits that are all naturally based on science. At 5:40 PM we re-boarded the "Downeaster" for the trip back home. It was a fun, educational, and exciting day for everyone!

ABCs of CONSTRUCTION AT THE CIVIC CENTER
In the first photo, Justin Giroux works on a woodworking project at the ABCs of Construction last year. Students are allowed to take completed projects home.
In the second photo, students are timed during a nailing competion.
Each year, a variety of programs at CATC attend the ABCs of Construction at the Civic Center in Augusta. Held in November, this programs gives students an opportunity to try their hand at everything from crane safety to electrical installation. There are competitions, including a nailing competion (where students have to nail wood together and then remove the nails cleanly as quickly as possible... competitions can be against co-students or students from other schools), and many opportunities to meet with local business people. Students looking to further their employment future get the opportunity to shake hands with company owners, and to learn more about steps they can take to get a job after graduation. This year's ABC field trip is set for November 13th.
Building Construction Program visits Mainely Trusses
Photo 1: Employees at Mainely Trusses wait for a piece of lumber to come through the machine, ending the creation process (which starts with computer input).
Photo 2: Employees put touches on a roof truss at the Mainely Trusses factory.
Students in Building Construction visit Mainely Trusses in Fairfield, to learn firsthand the process behind truss manufacturing. The decision to use trusses on the house the students build for KVCAP will depend upon the house itself (size, etc.). However, learning how a truss is created is an important part of the foundational knowledge of building construction. Special thanks to Mainely Trusses for hosting us each year, and for providing us with a great tour!
