Overview
Students enrolled in the Law Enforcement program will gain a head start in this increasingly competitive field. The program’s curriculum covers everything from criminal law and crime prevention to defensive tactics and criminal investigation. The course in designed to help students make a career choice in the many occupations available in this field and to prepare them for further training or education in the criminal justice / law enforcement field.

Program curriculum
Students in the Law Enforcement program are introduced to a wide range of skills and subject matters including:

  • Police Ethics / Civil Liability / Discretion
  • Eligibility / Hiring standards
  • Probable Cause / Reasonable Suspicion
  • Warrantless Arrest / Search Warrants
  • Ceremony and Drill instruction
  • Orientation and introduction to Maine criminal law, traffic law, liquor law, juvenile law 
  • Defensive tactics and handcuffing techniques
  • CPR / AED certification
  • Handgun Safety certification
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness certification
  • Use of Force Continuum
  • Traffic enforcement (Low risk / High risk stops), OUI investigations and Accident investigations
  • Criminal investigation and crime scene processing – Mock crime scene
  • Patrol procedures, search & seizure, arrest procedures
  • Interview techniques
  • Orientation to drug investigations, explosives investigations, computer crimes
  • Fingerprinting
  • Domestic violence investigations
  • Report writing
  • Introduction to K-9, Tactical, Bomb Teams

Students will be introduced to Guest Instructors / Speakers from Local Police Agencies, State Police, Augusta Fire Department, Fire Marshall’s Office, Warden Service, Border Patrol, Probation & Parole, District Attorney, Attorney General’s Office, National Guard, Martial Arts, and Life Flight.
